Description

Got a vagina? Know someone who does? If yes, then Shmirshky is for you (if no, then you're probably an alien from outer space welcome!). Shmirshky is the first menopause book of its kind it's quick, funny, and full of love! Rest assured, this is not your mother's menopause book. The truth is, your mother probably never had a menopause book, and if she did, she probably thought it was really boring. Let's face it, menopause doesn't have the best reputation in the world. It's rarely talked about, and when it is, it's usually quickly dismissed and often dreaded. Shmirshky redefines this time in a woman's life, turning a taboo topic into an all-inclusive page-turner. Whether you're a forty-five-year-old woman in perimenopause or an eighteen-year-old guy who thinks his mom is in need of an exorcism, Shmirshky is the perfect introduction to a subject we all encounter in one way or another. If you think menopause is a crummy experience, then Shmirshky is right up your alley!

Customer Reviews

Five StarsI read this book and loved it so I bought this for my daughter for when she gets older.5Is it HOT in here is it JUST ME?Does that sounds familiar? If you are like me traveling with a colleague who all of a sudden is dripping with sweat down her neck you could just open the window, turn the air conditioning or suggest that she (and you) read Shmirshky - a short, well-written and humorous (and god forbid educational!) book about menopause that will help you understand what it is like and what women can do deal with this coming of age. No magical cure or recommendations (that should be for you and your physician) but just all the right questions to ask and a way to discuss a taboo subject that is not dinner table conversation (but should). As a physician who can remember that his mother went through a hysterectomy and came back depressed without ever even discussing why? or what happened? or why is mom so depressed? I highly recommend that you READ and BUY this book for your friends. You will feel more human and supportive of your friends who seem forgetful, moody, depressed and why they are sweating in the middle of a meeting... IS IT HOT HERE OR IS IT JUST ME??? Shmrishky is an intelligent, witty and mostly helpful book to start talking about one of the last taboo subjects in our society5For the perimenopausal shmirskyShmirsky (wonderfully subtitled "Think Inside the Box"), by the enigmatically abbreviated "E", is a short little book about vaginas, specifically vaginas that are in or are nearing perimenopause. "Shmirsky," in the author's parlance, means both "vagina" and "female," and she happily uses the word throughout the book in both senses. In Shmirsky E describes her experiences going through menopause, and she offers a lot of platitudes as well as real information to readers: lists of menopause-related internet resources, information about hormone therapy options and thyroid conditions, and so on. E is very big on menopausal shmirskies (shudder) getting support--not only from their gynecologists but also from family and friends, one's "shmirsky [shudder] board": perimenopause can be something of a party.I understand that the author's cutesy terminology and writing style are meant to put the reader at ease, but as my parenthetical shudders above may suggest, I have a hard time with it. Give me bare medical terminology any day over this. The cutesiness is often over the top:"While you're doing this research [to find a gynecologist], think of yourself as a shmirsky private investigator at the center of a sexy espionage thriller. It's always the middle of a hot summer in those stories, so your hot flashes set the mood perfectly. Put on a big-brimmed hat and speak with a 1940s New York accent, and you'll be good to go. You see, looking for a gynecologist can get pretty exciting!"I also think that it's not always clear who the intended audience of the book is: the perimenopausal shmirsky (shudder) is unlikely to require a definition of "gynecologist" or "PMS," for example. All that said, if you're a shmirsky (sigh) nearing menopause, this book may offer some helpful advice.-- Debra Hamel3Finally Understanding A WomanShmirshky is a delightful, easy-to-read book which provides excellent insight into the effects of perimenopause and menopause on female behavior. After 38 years, I finally understand my wife. Since a successful relationship requires an equal effort by both partners, I strongly recommend Shmirshky to everyone who want to strengthen the bond with a significant other. Shmirshky is a perfect gift for Mother's Day, Father's Day, or any other occasion.5Good To KnowNew Book! This one is a little bit out of my "normal" reads, LOL, but informative nonetheless. It's about women who are going through menopause, and pre-menopause. I'm a bit young for this now, but it is good to know what's to come! It's not like people discuss this stuff on the regular- though maybe they should. If all women go through some kind of menopausal issues- why not at least understand what's going on?It's a but much at times- the author is trying really hard to be funny and witty, and sometimes it's just like GROAN, ok, yep. Got it. And the words Shmirshky and Erlick are used every other second. But it is not a dry read, it's not boring, and that is saying something when the topic is as "touchy" as this one. If you are going to read a book on the subject- and we all should- give this one a try. It's a quick read, and like I said- you won't be bored. It also has some good suggestions for going to the doctor and things to watch out for. Kind of like a "What to Expect When You're Expecting....the Menopause Years" (LOL)4Shrmirshky review on SweepTight.comOk, let me start off by saying that I am 32 years old, so I hope I have several years before I have to deal with menopause. However, I decided to read this book because I have always been a hormonal mess and I also have lot of women in my life who have/are/will be going through the change.Hormones can seriously run a woman's life. For me they do, at least. I recently had my hormones tested because I was having serial killer-like PMS, cystic acne and a plethora of other hideous side effects. Turns out that my body was not producing enough estrogen or progesterone due to adrenal fatigue. My doctor gave me some drops to go under my tongue and I have noticed a lot of positive changes. Hormone replacement is not for everyone and there is a chapter in the book that discusses this. The author is not a doctor, scientist or a celebrity, just a women and a mother with experience and knowledge on this topic. Personally, I find that in most cases, it is more beneficial to read a person's real story than to try and comprehend actual medical case studies. It's far more entertaining and interesting, that's for sure!No woman should ever be embarrassed to discuss menopause since every one of us will go through it. Yet, sadly, it is a topic that is slightly taboo. E addresses this and stresses the fact that you should talk about it with everyone! Ignoring it will not make it go away and awareness is key to help cope with any symptoms you may be experiencing. My fiance is well aware of all my hormone issues. Poor guy, I think he's developing a radar for my PMS.Here are a few of the reasons I like this book:Funny: I read this book very quickly because it held my interest right away. Humor will get you everywhere with me. E has nicknames for the female and male private parts - shmirshky and erlick - I would much rather read those two words over and over again instead of vagina and penis!Tickle your feet notes: There are definitions and additional tidbits of info available on the bottom of each page. Great because you do not have to stop and look up something if you need further info. It's right on the same page.Experiences: You will not just read E's stories. Her Shmirshky board of friends has chimed in, too. The more women that spill about the fun of PM+M (perimenopause + menopause) the better!Gay husbands: The gay men in E's life that give her friendship, love and support like a husband, but of course they are just friends. I NEED ONE!Charts: Next time you have blood work done, see for yourself what your numbers should look like. Find very useful charts and information in this book.Choose a doctor: E extensively interviews any doctor before choosing. In the book she includes tips and things you should look for before you commit to one.For men, too: Did you know there is also male menopause? Yep, they can have some nasty surprises as well and it's best to be prepared for this. Men should read this book to understand not only what is going on with the women they love, but also to be aware of what can creep up on them.Hysterectomy: There is a scary chapter that is a must-read if you ever are facing the decision to get a hysterectomy. It's not necessarily the easy way out!Sumo: This is hilarious and I am sure everyone can relate. E talks about the sumo wrestler in her head that is a constant critic. For example: My inner sumo has been telling me all day that I am ugly and gross and best get on the treadmill asap. Sumos are counter-productive and need to be squished from our minds!Journal: Writing down your thoughts and feelings is therapeutic for any time in life, but especially during menopause. It can also help someone down the line if you share it with them.Symptoms chart: See if what you are going through is normal or something to look into further with your doctor. A handy chart is in this book.As you can see there is a lot packed in to this little book! I didn't even cover everything. Reading this book can really shed a light on any hormone havoc that you or someone you love is trying to cope with!5Fun, infomative and insightful...When your body has decided to write a whole new set of rules, but refuses to tell you what they are, you have several options: cope, obtain clinical information that is indecipherable to one in the non-medical world or read "Shmirshky". Anyone going through this period will tell you that it is no fun - so whenever one can obtain sound advice in a humorous way, I say "grab it"!. "Shmirshky" is a fast read, filled with good information, mixed with a dose of honesty, reality and laughter. It prepares those who are just beginning the journey, and assists those well on their way. I loved it.5This is a MUST READ!!!Calling ALL women!! If you ever wanted to laugh, cry, and LEARN about menopause and what's happening to your body, soul and brain PICK UP this book!! It is a MUST read in 2010!! Calling ALL men who have a women in your life.. this is a read for you too!! Loved every minute of it!!!Brilliant!!5Never too Old to Learn--about my SHMIRSHKY!How I wish I could have met E. and read her book before going through all of the Menopause issues. Her explanations are easy to understand--not too technical. I can now say:"Oh is that what this feeling or that problem was all about"!Reading this little book is like relating to a good friend--being totally honest--and laughing out loud at her descriptions--and conversations with you--her reader.Do we women all have SHMIRSKEYS--you bet! And now I know mine. This book will be given to my daughter and daughter-in-law--knowing they will be helped--with caring from E.--and with love from me.5MenopauseThis book talked about the crazies that goes on when menopause starts. It was humorous and right on. It describes me perfectly.3
