Customer Reviews

I have to budget 5 minutes just to get the stupid thing to play musicI purchased this for the sole purpose of running spotify on my home speaker system. It has ridiculous lag in recognizing input, and half the time it doesn't recognize. I have to budget 5 minutes just to get the stupid thing to play music. This does not legitimately function as a tablet.1Save up for something better.I got this as a door prize. It's ok. Keyboard function doesn't work in clash of clans app. Not very intuitive. I'd recommend saving up for something better.2Five StarsJust as described works great got here befor arivle date awsom 5 stars5Truly a bang for your buck! Excellent. For the price, you can't beat this tablet. Add a micro SD card and it's one of the best values on the market.5... camera which if it could focus would only be good for selfies because there is no camera on the ...I got this as an anniversary gift from work and wow there isn't anything about this that could be called even ok lets talk about the camera which if it could focus would only be good for selfies because there is no camera on the back side to take a picture of anything ,theres only the camera on the front but it doesn't focus so you might say there is no camera ,now lets talk about the screen boy if you don't have it directly in front of you you cant see it and I mean 5 degrees from straight and you aren't seeing nuttin!!! now lets talk about how it scrolls um yeah it does but just barely it goes in jerks or sometimes just doesn't go it seems to be about a second or two behind your finger just for grins I went to you tube to try to watch a video and it took me quite a few tries to get there ,it seems to miss a letter here or there but anyway I finaly got to yourube and I typed in the video I wanted to watch and it come up about 6 or so from the top and do you think I could get it to scroll down 6 videos? heck no try as I might I couldn't scroll down without selecting one of the other videos[which I did not want ] and I tried for a solid 15 minutes it just didn't happen so I watched a little bit of the one I didn't want and it started playing but stopped and started ,well I thought maybe my wifi wasn't working well so I grabbed my Iphone and went to youtube and played the same video I was watching no prob all in all I cant call this thing a legitimate product as it kind of tries to work but IT DOESNT!!!!!!!!!! hopefully I can return it somehow and since it was a gift im guessing I will just thorw it in the trash1You get what you pay for.Low end tablet. Crashes often. The screen has a pretty bad glare. Many apps and games don't work. My two oldest boys got these for Christmas from grandma. They are not very intuitive for our 7 and 9 year olds. The price was good but I guess you get what you pay for. Best off paying more and getting an apple or Samsung device.2Great, cheap, reliable little tablet, but keep your expectations within reason!First of all, I need to disclose that I bought this tablet on sale from Fred Meyer, not Amazon, so it's not a verified purchase. But I have bought and reviewed other products here on Amazon and felt compelled to write a review about this tablet because there are so many negative reviews regarding the quality and enormous amount of problems people seem to be having or have had with similar models of Zeki tablets. And because so far I'm very happy with it. It's a cheap, low-end tablet, so I really wasn't be expecting something the quality of a Samsung, Dell or Ipad costing hundreds of dollars more. What matters to me most are the innards, how the processor runs, lag time, heat issues, screen freezes, etc. And since I can't afford to pay hundreds of dollars for anything right now, much less a tablet, I took a chance and bought a Zeki in spite of all the bad reviews. So here is my review of Zeki's 7-inch tablet, Model Number TBDG734B, in which I will try to address some of the issues that other reviewers of previous or similar models of Zeki tablets have addressed. (NOTE: Please also see my two updates at the end of this review.)Android Version:This model runs on Android 4.4.2 (KitKat). This is the version just prior to the latest version, Android 5.0 (Lollipop). Most smartphones and tablets are still using KitKat or Jelly Bean and this version is sufficient to run all the latest apps from Play Store.Materials:First of all, the case is plastic, but the screen does appear to be glass, though I would venture a guess that it's probably not gorilla glass. It does collect fingerprints easily, but then so does the glass on my Nextbook tablet. I have not applied a screen protector and probably won't. If you're not hard on electronics and not in the habit of dropping your tablet and smartphone all the time, the plastic casing and lack of gorilla glass should not be an issue. One thing I really like about this tablet is the size. It has the standard size 7-inch screen, but the black bezel border around the screen is much slimmer than that of my Nextbook 7, which makes it much easier to hold comfortably in my small hands and short fingers.Wifi:I had no problem connecting to my home Wifi with this tablet. You do have to log in with the encryption key (not the password), if you have set up your Wifi as a secured network. It's a one-time entry and then you are always connected, unless you manually disconnect the network. I haven't tried it in the local coffee shop or library here, so I can't speak to how it connects to other Wifi networks.Apps:Unlike reviews here on Amazon of previous models of Zeki tablets, this model TBDG734B, DOES come pre-loaded with Google Play and I've had no problems downloading apps from Play Store or getting them to run. I have found only one app (Expense Register Ext) that does run on my smartphone, which runs ICS which apparently not compatible with KitKat (I got a message that it wasn't compatible and the tablet wouldn't let me download it). However, that may be a fault of the developer neglecting to update the app's compatibility for newer versions of Android. Storage seems ample (8 gigabytes expandable to 32, if you buy an additional micro SD card). I don't use it for music or photos so I don't know how soon that would fill up if you had a lot of songs, photos or movies you wanted to put on it.A plus for me is that you can connect multiple Google accounts. For purposes of in-app purchases, I have connected two separate Google accounts to this tablet and you can also connect multiple cloud accounts. I have mine connected to my Microsoft OneDrive.I also downloaded and installed Amazon's Kindle App for Android and can access all my Kindle ebooks on this tablet. It comes with two other ebook readers already installed: Play Books and Socio eReader. It also comes preloaded with all the standard Android apps: calendar (which syncs with your Google calendar), clock, email, calculator, camera, explorer, drive, music, movie studio, ApkInstaller, etc. Also pre-loaded are three browsers: the standard Android browser, Chrome and Opera. Chrome works great but took up too much space that I wanted to use for other apps. So I use Opera, which displays web pages just as they look on your PC and takes up only half the space that Chrome took up. (I simply uninstalled all Chrome's updates and reverted it to factory install, which reduced the space it took up from 64 mg back down to 4 mg.) It also comes pre-loaded with a suite of Google apps, including YouTube, and two other appstores I don't use: Soc.io Mall and one through Opera. The only app that came preloaded that I uninstalled was the app for eMusic, because I wanted the space to load other apps that wanted. Unlike previous models of Zeki tablets, this one does NOT come pre-loaded with the Amazon appstore. But as I said, I did download and install the Kindle app, so my guess is that you could download and install Amazon appstore as well. Keep in mind, though, that you will have to go to your security settings and toggle on the selection to allow installation of apps from unknown sources.Voice Search:Google's voice search works great. Voice recognition is good. When I said "weather," it pulled up the web page with weather outlook for my city. Be mindful that you do need to turn on geo location for Google to find restaurants, driving routes and the weather for your area. You will find that under: Settings - Personal - Location.Lag Time:There is a slight lag of about 5 to 7 seconds loading certain apps and games, which still is not too bad and not any longer than I have to wait for my PC to load things. There is no lag in the actual running of apps. I've also not noticed any lag when playing games. The four games I have downloaded and played so far are Plants vs. Zombies 2, Fairy Dale, Tribez, Township and Dungeon Keeper, so I know, at the least, that those games will play without lag.Touchscreen:The touchscreen is accurate and very responsive to touches and swipes. It has a capacitive touchscreen with 5-point multi-touch and gravity rotation (portrait and landscape modes). Gravity rotation works well, rotating to landscape or portrait in all directions.Resolution:The resolution is not the highest (800 x 480), but honestly it's really not that bad, in my opinion. My vision is not the greatest to begin with (I wear bi-focles), but I have no problem reading news and viewing photos. Games display beautifully with crisp graphics and true colors.Camera (front-facing):It's true, the camera is crappy. Not even as good as the camera on my smartphone. But I didn't buy a tablet to use as a camera. I have a camera to use as a camera. What is cool, though, is you can take screenshots. I took a screenshot of a game I was playing and sent it to my Facebook page. It was grainy, but how cool to be able to show my friends what game I was playing! You can load Skype on this tablet to make free Wifi calls, but I haven't used it, so I can't address how screen chats using the camera would look.Earbuds:The earbuds that come included with this tablet are barely audible. Buy a better set. And you will want earbuds. I'm hard of hearing and the volume on the speaker located on the back of the tablet doesn't go up very high.Heat Issues:It does heat up during use down towards the bottom near the power button and plug connectors (I'm assuming that's where the processor is probably located) when playing games or using apps that use a lot of processing power, but not any hotter than my Nextbook 7 does when playing games. I haven't noted any smell coming from it heating up and so far there haven't been any screen freezes or shutdowns.Battery:First charge takes about 10 hours. Recharges usually take less than two hours. I usually don't run my battery down below 25%. Recharges using the included AC and USB to PC cords. You can access apps and use the tablet while recharging using USB to PC cord. Sleep mode uses very little power and you can choose the amount of time before the screen goes to sleep through display settings. You can also brighten or dim the display to save the charge.Complaints about Zeki tablets not powering on:Unlike my Nextbook tablet, when turning the Zeki tablet on, you need to push AND HOLD the power button until the screen comes up, which may take up to five seconds. I made the mistake when I first charged my Zeki of not holding the button and waiting until the home screen came up and thought at first that my tablet was defective until I re-read the manual, which clearly states to PRESS AND HOLD the power button UNTIL the screen comes on. Also, to unlock the screen When holding the tablet in landscape mode, swipe the lock up or down, depending upon which way you're holding it. In portrait mode, swipe to the right.Reviews of previous models regarding fragile mini-USB and AC power ports:I would say that when plugging and unplugging the power and USB cords, always remember to GENTLY push them straight in and out and try not to jiggle them. In my opinion, that would greatly reduce the amount of problems people are having with these tablets. With that said, the earphone connector on my tablet IS a little wonky. The earphones will only play sound through one earbud when pushed in all the way, so I plug them in only three-quarters of the way to get sound through both earbuds and I generally leave my earbuds plugged in at all times so I'm not plugging and unplugging them all the time.Complaints about the cheap feel of the plastic casing and fragile construction:My take on this is that these are not high-end tablets, but cheapies. To get them at that cheap price you're getting plastic casing, merely acceptable resolution and are not getting a workhorse tablet that you're going to want to be plugging into your television to watch movies for hours at a time. In my humble opinion, I would say that if you keep your expectations within reason, this is a good, cheap, reliable little tablet for people who are gentle with their electronics and who don't want to pay hundreds of dollars on a tablet to use just for reading books, the news, accessing their Word documents, Google calendar, tracking expenses and playing a few games. As cheap as this tablet is, especially if you can get a deal on it here on Amazon or in a store, if it does poop out in a year or you just get bored with it and end up shelving it, you won't have wasted a lot of money. It might also be a good introductory tablet for kids, although I can't say how much abuse a tablet like this could take before it would break. Even though it's a cheap tablet, it's definitely not a toy.In conclusion: Please note that I'm posting this review NOT to dismiss other reviews of this product and I apologize if it appears so. Nor am I saying that some of these tablets won't turn out to be lemons or defective, as I'm sure some will. But then there are defective Ipads out there, too, although Apple does stand behind their products. Not sure about customer service for this particular product, but I would say just be sure to research the seller you buy from and be sure they stand behind their return policy. I might just be lucky to have gotten a good unit, but so far I'm very pleased with it. The store I bought it from has a 30-day return policy, so I will be using the heck out of it for the next 30 days and will do a follow-up to this review to let you know if I've run into problems. Any questions, please feel free to ask and I will try to answer them.UPDATE January 28, 2015: Over two-and-a-half months later, my Zeki tablet is still running great with no issues. The only complaint I have is that I run all my apps from the SD card to save space on the device and when they're automatically updated, they're moved from the SD card back to the tablet, so I have to move them once again to the SD card. Also, Norton's AV runs slow while scanning. Lookout runs much faster in the background. These issues probably have more to do with the software than the device itself, because all my games and other apps run smoothly with no problems. I've plugged and unplugged the USB and AC cords with no loosening of the USB or AC plug ports. Again, I always push them straight in and out and try not to jiggle the plug ends. The chassis and screen have held up very well with no loosening or gaps around the edges where the glass comes in contact with the plastic. The screen, however, is very prone to fingerprints, but that has been a problem I've had with all my devices. I apparently have very oily fingertips. I use only eyeglass cleaner applied to a tissue or soft cloth to clean the glass. I still haven't applied a screen protector and haven't gotten any scratches on the glass. The touch-screen is still very responsive. I continue to be very satisfied with my Zeki and wouldn't hesitate to purchase another one.UPDATE: July 9, 2015: Unfortunately, after 8 months of moderate use, my Zeki tablet's internal battery will no longer hold a charge. It happened quite suddenly night before last as I was reading an e-book using the Kindle app for Android. The screen flickered a few times, something it never did before, and then went dark. I knew the battery had a full charge, so I plugged it in and, sure enough, the battery indicator showed it was fully charged. I unplugged it and the screen went dark again. Without being able to use it without it being plugged in, it's basically useless to me as an e-reader or for mobile gaming, which is mainly what I used it for. While I stand by my original review, I've reduced it to 4 stars for lack of longevity. Considering I got this on sale at a brick-and-mortar store for only $49, I can't really complain. It ran well while it lasted. You do get what you pay for, however. If you want something that will last longer, it's better to pay a little more. I still do believe this is a nice beginner tablet for a child or for an adult who's not quite sure how much they'll actually be using a tablet and doesn't want to invest a lot of money. I would wait to catch it on a sale, though. In the meantime, I've gone back to my old Nextbook running Gingerbread. It's over three years old, but is still running strong and has the backlight I need to read in the dark, plus a much sharper display.4
