Customer Reviews

Mepis Linux looks the best I have seenKind of expensive unless you inherit some as I did, but it is a touchscreen Linux box with 4GB internal flash with 3 USB ports and one SD card slot and Wifi. I figured out how to load a Linux version onto them so they boot. Mepis Linux looks the best I have seen. Ubuntu on a flash stick is too slow. It has an Intel Atom processor (Z530 1.6Mhz) and 1GB of RAM and a 4GB internal flash drive. 3 USB 2.0 ports. 12V power so I use as a spare login device slid under the seat. To boot from a USB stick with boot Linux image you hold in the F10 key (USB keyboard). The Linux I put on a Live boot 16GB flash (sandisk 8$) was SimplyMEPIS-1.5G_11.9.92_32.iso for 32bit intel processors. I am still trying to figure out how to best divide up the 4GB flash Here is the install sequence :1) Use the Install Mepis icon on desktop2) confirm the dialog.3) Select sda for the install location4) Select the partition manager5) delete the existing partitions on sda6) Set all the file system types to ext3 (what we had for the non-FAT32 partitions in the Avaya phone firmware).7) Partition 1 sda 1 : 10 Mib ext3 name /boot 8) Set the bit for this a boot by double click on the new partition or however you want.9) Partition 2 sda2 : 200 Mib ext3 name /home Putting this after the root seemed to cause a failure to install the GRUB bootloader but maybe just coincidence.10) Partition 3 (last of the non extended partitions) - sda3 : the remaining size ext3 name / 11) Select in the install custom install on existing partitions.12) Select for root the sda3 partition13) leave as no swap (this has 2GB RAM and flash is not good for swap).14) Select for home root which is for some reason not swappable in memory order with the large actual / root partition we setup.15) Select next and it will warn you of a long install time as it copies in as much of the Mepis install as it can into sda3 .16) Then install the Grub boot loader and use the MBR (master boot record) it should and do so with no complaint. Where it can fail. I am suspecting that allowing the install to use the whole sda flash drive on a previous run may allow this method to work (something about the format of the MBR area at the very disk start?).17) Then setup the time and user and root name stuff and it should now be ready to boot without using the USB stick. To get the WiFi to come up :1) Be sure you are in the new install (rebooted).2) Log in as root3) open a terminal4) cd to /etc/modprobe.d5) echo blacklist acer-wmi > acer-wmi-blacklist.conf6) reboot You can use an external keyboard or install a touchscreen keyboard. To get a keyboard for the touch screen open a terminal as root and use: apt-get install matchbox-keyboardafter install use matchbox-keyboard 3
