    Probably the best option for connecting to a sound systemI have been using this audio adapter for about 10 months now. It does a great job at getting the audio from my computer to my sound system with the optical output. My complaint with it is that occasionally it overheats and audio goes out briefly, causing me to have to go into the windows audio settings, switch my default device to my laptop speakers and then switch it back to the sound system. This is a minor inconvenience but happens about weekly. Otherwise, it is nearly plug and play.Update: still has the same reliability issues, but also still works on Windows 10 (as of 12/9/17) so you can generally rely on it.3Works great in Windows 10 + Lenovo Y510p [How To Install][Update: Sept. 4th, 2016]Download this:[...]Just run setup.exe, and restart your computer. (June 6th, 2015) update: I was tinkering around my sound card and noticed that I didn't have true surround output with the fix I showed to you. Fortunately there's a workaround for installing the program and outputting correctly the sound. This has been tested on Windows 10 Build 10130.Here it goes:1st. Download this file[...]2nd. Open it and extract its content anywhere, in the case of this example I'm going to open the file and copy and pastethe folder "CM6206-1.08(QR)" into my desktop. There will be a bunch of folders in there.3rd. DO NOT CLICK Setup.exe (I know you did it ;) )4th. Go to the extracted folder and head into "WIN81(WHQL)", there you will see a "Setup.exe" and "Setup.ex_" file YES, with the underscore at the end!.5th. Rename "Setup.exe" to "Setup.exe_bak" (or whatever)6th. Rename "Setup.ex_" to "Setup.exe"7th. Run "Setup.exe" by double clicking or pressing enter.8th. You will now see the "Installing USB Multi-Channel Audio Device". If it asks you to connect it, connect the device.9th. Restart your PC.10th. After restarting on the task bar at the right (system tray) you'll see a blue icon. Double click to configure11th. Select "Digital Output" and then "Set Default". Press OK13. You now have setup your digital adapter! :D :D :DIn case you need to roll back to your previous configuration, repeat steps 11 - 12. Instead of selecting "Digital Output" select your original device.Now about the proper product, I've seen an increase in sound quality Sounds louder, brighter and deep bass can be appreciated. I'm no audiophile so I don't have that ability to perceive great sound quality... But for me it was worth the addition!Now rocking 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound in my Y510p ;)5Works great. See below for tips.Probably the same story as many people. My desktop PC had a Logitech 5.1 speaker system (with green, orange, black cables) connected to it. Desktop PC died, and I replaced it with a laptop (a fairly old HP Elitebook 8460p) with only a headphone jack. Got this as it seemed to fit what I needed, and the price was right. And I was correct - I now have 5.1 surround sound from my laptop. A few items of note:1. It's pretty compact (see photo)2. It can be connected via USB 2.0 port (I actually have it connected to a USB 2.0 hub) - do not require USB 3.03. No drivers needed for my OS (Windows 10 Professional v1903) - Windows 10 automatically loaded the necessary drivers.4. I initially was not getting any sound from my center channel. I found out that I had to set that up in Windows 10 by running ([Windows key]+R) the mmsys.cpl Control Panel app. From here, I selected my 5.1 speaker set-up and tested everything.I can't speak to sound decoding accuracy/quality as I am not an audiophile, but movies and MP3s sound perfectly fine to me. Hope this helps!5Finally 7.1 from my HTPC!So my movie theater audio processor does not accept HDMI. It accepts, eight channel Direct in as well as optical and other old school audio hookups. My devices in my theater are my Xbox, Blu-ray player, and my HTPC. They are all connected via HDMI splitter to the projector. Audio for the Xbox and the Blu-ray player are sent directly to the audio system via optical-out (5.1) from the splitter. Unfortunately my htpc see's the projector through HDMI, but only as a video monitor that doesn't have audio out. So it disables audio out via HDMI, eliminating my optical audio out from the splitter. This now makes my audio restricted to headphone jack to RCA left and right channel to the back of the audio processor and giving me glorious 2-channel stereo for my movies. This device solve that issue giving me eight channels out from USB directly into my audio processor. Now when I want to watch movies from my htpc I simply select 8 channel Source on my audio processor giving me a real 7.1 surround sound option over my two 5.1 options of Blu-ray player and Xbox.One day I will eventually buy a current audio processor that accepts HDMI in and eliminate 90% of the cables that are going all over the place behind my theater.5I would hate to see it on all day and nightLet's be clear. First of all, when I plug my headphones into the 3.5mm jack on the front face of the device, there's no way to get a left and right ear playback. I can wiggle it juuuuuust right to receive a left and right sound playback, but there's no way to hold it there. One ear only.Also when I run something into the line-in 3.5mm jack on the face of the device, that works as far as the sound goes, but the device become far too hot to be something you want to mess with.We've seen too many accidents with cheap developers trying to sell at cut rate prices as well as purely knock off manufacturers selling products BOTH of which start on fire to be able to accept anything from sellers which become this HOT. It's hot! That's all there is too it. Warm is okay. Hot is not. That was just from 2 or 3 minutes. I would hate to see it on all day and night. House fire??? It's just bad research and development plus the faulty manufacturing in some aspects to. Lazy!My original intent was to buy this to kill the static from my computer's sound card when it plays back into my mixing board. It did not do that.From computer to mixing board WITHOUT this device: static.From computer THROUGH THIS device to mixing board: static.From my smartphone to mixing board: clear without static.1 junk jack maybe more. Overheats. Does not cure the static problem from my computer.Stop 'EmYou have to be careful with the quality of cheap devices. As frugal buyers that is the key to the whole frugal movement where a manufacturer will have a bad run from their plants, and then they get a wholesale buyer that buys them at a cut rate deal who thinks he or she can dump them off on the consumers for a profit. That's the game of the gang play.They don't have laws against this in many countries. It's up to us to call out the shills when we see it to keep our makers and distributors honest about standard integrity. The more that we can make the retailers take loss on their purchases of bad product, the more they stop taking those chances, and play straight. WHAT FIXES THEM IS A LOSS TO THEIR POCKETS. If they don't want the job as wholesale buyers/retailers, they need to find another role doing something else in society.1Download the updated Windows 10 driver from the Vantec website first and install.I purchased the Vantec NBA-200U 7.1 Channel Adapter to enable my Windows 10 laptop to 5.1 sound through my 5.1 analog surround sound speaker system. Although I have only tested the adapter's analog output, it works absolutely great!It took a little bit of work (probably 30 minutes) to get it set up. Here's how I did it: I first downloaded the updated driver at the Vantec website and installed it (search for "NBA-200U"). Following the installation instructions that appear after extracting and running (as administrator) the "setup.exe" file, I plugged in the adapter to a USB 3.0 port. I plugged my 5.1 speakers into the front of the adapter: green for front, black for rear, orange for sub-woofer/center. When the installation finished, I rebooted the computer. (Make sure you reboot so that the software can finish loading.) Once rebooted, I went into the Windows 10 control panel and ran the sound applet, setting it up for 5.1 sound. Then, I checked the system task bar and found a blue icon with a white swirl. Once I clicked on the icon, a "USB Multi-Channel Audio Device" application started that enabled me to set up all kinds of things, including a mixer, karaoke, and effects. I found that if I set the "System Input" to "2 CH", enabled the "Xear Surround Mix", and set the "Output Mode", "Analog Output", to "6 Speakers", while tweaking the "Output Device" settings (click the speaker icon to enable) to make the rear speakers a bit louder ("+2"), I got great surround sound while playing a stereo recording I had uploaded to YouTube. I listened to all of the speakers while testing to make sure the front, rear, center, and sub-woofer all worked. The volume and mute controls work perfectly.5Good Product With No Suupport Worth Speaking About Although I Described My Attempts To Get SupportI bought this because I wasn't entirely happy with the StarTech 7.1 and found that VanTec's 7.1 USB Audio Adapter is identical to the StarTec -- there is no difference at all. I think they must have bought the same product from the same OEM (original equipment manufacturer) with different labels on them.Also, those wishing for customer support should give up before even trying. When I went to their homepage their "Support" "search engine" is really just a short menu which took me to a page which lists all of their products over some 8 webpages. Since there was no rhyme or reason to how their products are sorted. Therefore I had to search each page until I found this (page 6 I think) and then when I went to the page for this product it was just a copy of the install instructions that come with the product.When I went to Product Support it was a massive FAQ with so many pages I didn't bother to count them I did try to find my product but gave up. There is no phone number or e-mail address given so I suspect they do not want to be bothered with their customer's problems. As is the motto for all too many factories, "Let's just ship it and hope it isn't sent back."3Great for VMsI use my laptop with virtual machines for my work and needed to be able to have each of them accessing a different physical LAN network for testing. This does the trick nicely with two separate interfaces. As it turns out on my home network this adapter is 10MB/s faster at transfers than the single port adapter I was using making real world transfer speeds to the NAS around 50MB/s. Needless to say this is now the adapter I use for everything. Would highly recommend for anyone working with virtual machines and needing physical interfaces for them.5No 7.1/5.1 from digital optical/SPDIF output!!!!I bought this for my home theater PC as my current video card with HDMI output would only do 2 channel audio. I started looking at sound cards. I am limited as I only have the low profile slots in the small form factor case I am using. I came upon this. There was nothing said in the description or anywhere that I could see on their website that states there is no 5.1/7.1 via digital out. This is crazy!! Why would you not allow the multi channel out through the digital outs? Why would you not state that you can only get the multi channel out through the analog output. As I have not had much time with this device other than trying to figure out the multi channel output I am unsure of the sound quality. It is now getting ready to hit my trash can.1Tried everything wth optical. Needed analog out cables, and finally worked.After messing with trying to get my older Pioneer VSX-D409 to accept and process an optical signal, running windows 7, which was driving me nuts, I read up on some people's reviews here, and as I am an old audiophile and recording pro from back in the day and have a ton of audio cables of nearly every type, I also employed three 1/8 inch to dual rca cables, disabled spdif in the program, ran it directly into my dvd 5.1 ports, restarted both receiver and PC, and windows was finally able to see the 5.1 in Speakers in "sound" and it finally properly route the separate signals properly. Still kinda frustrated that optical won't route the appropriately separated signals as was described and I'm seeing others here could achieve. Though, that does free up an optical port on my receiver I can use with an older teac burner which I could not really flawlessly connect as my two ports were full (one comes from tv)... I can only think it was the combo of windows 7, a "newer" device (compared to my older receiver), and the older pioneer receiver/amp which is still kickin it and I am not one to throw away and replace functional products. Glad I got it to work.4
