Customer Reviews

Not what I was expecting... Having DSL-AC68U router on the first floor and workstation PC with USB-AC56 on the second floor.I was expecting it to be the best combo for my wireless network solution. However I am very disappointed with 5GHZ stability. It may work good for coupe of hours but then connection become very unstable and pretty unuseful.. Got it connected now to 2.4GHZ and it's very stable for few days already, Getting speed upto 25 mbps of my 80mbps VDSL compared to the PC connected directly to the router by cable. Signal level showing -45dbm. LAN transfer goes for 32mbps download speed from another pc in LAN and upload of 40mbps. Adapter software showing in the same time connection quality of 115mbs.3 star of 5 for unreliable 5GHZ connection..********* UpdateRead a review from S1N1C regarding device drivers. I am uninstalled Asus software and driver, rebooted PC and then installed driver only for Edimax EW-7822UAC and now it's working very stable on 5Ghz and i am getting maximum available speed for my VDSL connection and also good transfer speed in LAN.Still can't give 5 star for buggy software+driver package from ASUS, but now it deserves 4 stars for sure. Very satisfied. 4Works great when it works, But... Works great when it works, but after a couple of months it became increasingly unstable, finally resulting in a solid blue indicator light and no connection. I bought it on Amazon prime. However, since it was over a month before I became convinced it wasn't going to work out, I guess I'll have to deal with ASUS to seek restitution.I will update and revise this review as we see how this works out with ASUS & Amazon. Please note: I went through the same trials as in S1N1C's review (still at the top of the reviews), but didn't have the good sense shown in the review to send it back the first time it became unstable (which was within the first 30 days). I thought if I just go directly to the RTWLANU Driver, it might work out. And it did for about two months with speeds consistently at 650 or occasionally 780. Then the instability set in again as described above. 1Buy only if you install third party drivers and feel comfortable doing so This is an interesting wireless adapter. It has a short cord that comes with it that provides about 3ft of length (which can be useful) and an adjustable antenna. When I first installed this, I was getting maybe 2MBPS on average (even after installing the appropriate Windows 10 drivers). I was getting quite frustrated as I expected to have a high functioning wireless adapter. I later followed the instructions from S1N1C to install EDIMAX drivers (whichever version is appropriate for your OS) and it now works well with over 300MBPS (on a 400MBPS connection, approximately 25 ft away with predominantly steel, concrete through the area). 4Fast and Painless I purchased this USB-AC56 to replace an old Linksys USB wireless adapter I was using now that my computer isn't situated next to the modem. Speeds were, well, less than stellar on the old adapter. This new one though? Wow, night and day difference! Where the old one would struggle to hit 2Mbs from the room directly above the router, this one is pulling in closer to 60Mbps. Not to mention I can now see a bunch of other networks, which is impressive since those houses are several hundred feet away! For the sake of transparency, I did screw in the optional antenna, so this isn't using the internal one.Windows 10 picks the adapter up without having to install the Asus software, and it works OK in that configuration, but I was able to get better performance by downloading the Realtek driver for the RTL8812AU, which is the chipset in the unit. Interestingly enough, the Realtek driver also identifies it as an Asus unit, and is newer than Asus's own driver. My only real complaint is the somewhat stiff USB cable (had to bend it to get it to stop from tipping over) and the blinking blue light. Seriously, tech companies, stop putting blue lights on everything! At least this one isn't stupidly bright. 5Great wireless connections, unstable USB connectivity I bought 3 of these for various devices in my home, and they work well for the most part. I have an AC router in my home and these connect to it very nicely. I consistently get data rates of 525 - 650 Mbps, with an occasional burst to 866 Mbps.File transfer rates are excellent, and streaming video from outside (Netflix) starts in HD mode right out of the gate (it used to start in a low-def mode, then over the course of 5-10 mins it would buffer enough to convert to HD).I'm only giving 3 stars because I am finding the USB connection to my computers to be unstable. I have tried both direct connection them to USB 3.0 ports and by using the cradle & cable, but in both cases I find I get random USB disconnect events. I do have the most recent drivers (as of late November 2014). Occasionally, i need to reboot any computer in question to get it to recognize the adapter again. I don't seem to have this issue with any other USB 3.0 devices on any of my computers, so I'm guessing there's a flaw in the device driver for this adapter.I am hoping another driver update fixes this problem because these are otherwise fantastic AC adapters.I will update this review later if I get a fixUpdate, 3.5 years later... 6/5/2018I should have posted this a long time ago, but an update to the Asus drivers in 2015 did fix the USB connectivity issue. These adapters work very well now (for what few devices I have left that don't have natively built-in wireless AC). Upgrading review to 5 stars. 5Super fast, easy to setup (Win10), great product My house is two stories. My router lives on the 2nd floor in the middle of the house. My previous set up yielded me around 5Mbps down and up which is atrocious and led me to look into this product. My setup is Windows 10. As others have mentioned, and ASUS states on their website, this is plug and play on Win 10. That's it.My speeds jumped from 5Mbps Down/Up to 83 down and 26 up! I have 75/75 internet so the up isn't amazing, but this is a remarkable improvement over my last adapter (motherboard integrated).I like that the adapter is able to be moved around via the USB cable and is the main reason why I didn't get the PCI-E version.Connection seems pretty stable so far. I did have a couple drop outs on 5GHZ but they could have been flukes as most days I don't have a single drop. The range also seems very good. My previous adapter only got me around 2/4 WiFi bars. This stays usually around 4/4.Overall, I can't really find any fault. Easy to use, fast, and adaptable. I guess it's a little pricey. 5You're better than this ASUS.... Well first of all let me start by saying I'm an ASUS fanboy, especially when it comes to motherboards. That being said I'm pretty disappointing with this.I purchased an ASUS AC Nighthawk router and this to avoid running Cat6 through my attic. I have 100Mbps down and 15 Mbps up. That being said I can max out my speed and even exceed speed on an Ethernet line (ty ISP!) On a wireless A/C connection 10 feet from my router? Not even 50Mbps. YES it is plugged into USB 3.0 so I should be good up to 480Mbps there. I almost run faster on my old N connection. The only thing that should limit me is my connection speed and i know my ISP is solid!)Not to mention the EMI shielding is HORRIBLE (i.e. non-existent) on this thing. The thing is so electrically noisy its unreal. I have speakers about a foot away on my desk that pick up the noise every time I start a decent size download or upload.Lesson learned: Run Ethernet, and USB wifi adapters are crap. DON'T PROMISE PERFORMANCE YOU CAN"T MEET ASUS! (Yes I realize the theoretical max isn't possible because of tcp/udp overhead, but <50% of my connection bandwidth......)Lastly....No microwaves were on during this test, and I was on an unoccupied wifi channel: no 5ghtz neighbors :D 2Measurements Disconnections are resolved if you deactivate any "USB monitoring" services/software from Windows, which usually comes pre-loaded in the OS, and install the new drivers. Also, go ahead in the Advanced settings of the card, and set your preference ONLY for "ac". Not "auto". This way it will only receive your signal, and will not bother with 2.4 transmissions. Very stable this way.Performance results (for those who are happy seeing the "876 mbps" or something, which is not the true performance but some vague availability which all cards display):-- This ASUS AC 56 - Throughput 210 - 119 mbps at signal strength -45 dbi (the utility indication said "780 mbps" which was just availability, not true speed).-- My laptop's internal Intel 7260 card - Throughput 340 - 240 mbps, at signal strength -46 dbi (!).(Throughput was measured using real time throughput software, not just one file, but continuous transmission for 10 minutes and repeat twice - I tested all four USB ports of the computer, and one port of an older laptop, with similar results). These results were confirmed even after I rebooted a couple of times, as well as in manual large file transfers (I actually measured some manually). They were even worse with different settings. The cards were tested independently (when one worked, the other was disabled).I also used the latest ASUS drivers from their website (today's date is November 8, 2015).This little USB card is a useful tool only if your laptop or desktop doesn't have a 5GHz receiver or for some reason if this could pick a signal a little better than your old internal or external card. But for Asus standards, very mediocre results. I'll give it three stars because it may be useful for some users in some situations, it looks good, the antenna is versatile, etc - that's all. Too expensive for the performance though (by the way, I also tried once the alternative drivers some suggest - same results). Asus 68 router, the new one. 3Working flawlessly (on a Windows 7 Pro 64 bit Desktop computer) since purchased about 6 months ago This is a great product. I have had it working for almost 6 months and never had a problem with it. I needed to replace my internal wi-fi board in my desktop computer running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and I wanted something that was easier to replace if it went bad. The ASUS USB-AC56 was the perfect answer. I decided on this product based on the reviews from other users and I was not disappointed. It proved to be more sensitive than my previous one and the price was fair for a product this good. Product installation was very straightforward:1.- Be sure your computer has internet access through an alternative means (a LAN cable directly connected to your modem works best)2.- Plug the ASUS USB-AC56 into a USB port and let it do its thing (LED will come on, flash, etc.)3.- Wait for Windows to look for and assign a driver to it4.- At this point, it should work perfectly (it did for me under Windows 7 Pro 64 bit)... but if not, go to the next step5.- Download an updated driver for your OS directly from ASUS at this link:https://www.asus.com/us/Networking/USBAC56/HelpDesk_Download/6.- If the file downloaded is zipped or otherwise compressed, you will have to unzip/uncompress it into another folder before proceeding.7.- Go to the Device Manager, find the ASUS wireless adapter and choose "Update driver".8.- Select the folder where you uncompressed the driver and allow Windows to update the driver.9.- All done !!! Go enjoy your new wi-fi adapter 5BUYER BEWARE! DOES NOT WORK IN 5G WITH WINDOWS 10! Asus is still selling this product but has not updated the drivers since 2015. The adapter works on 2.4 but freezes constantly on 5.0. I have torn my whole machine down twice to try and fix the problem and have found this is a problem for many people. I have two Asus laptops, I have bought several Asus routers. I have used Asus motherboards on three boxes I built. I have been loyal to Asus including buying 3 of these adapters at over 70 bucks apiece but I cannot stand by a company that does not stand by it's loyal customers. Now I have to buy another adapter because the company decided not to update the driver for 5G in Windows 10! It's unconscionable how many thousands of customers that Asus is leaving in a bind here! Either use 2.4 or buy another adapter. Im not spending another 90 bucks for the AC - 68! I don't even know if that works with Windows 10! BUYER BEWARE 1
