Customer Reviews

Amazing Sound! This makes audio transcription so much easier! Voices are clear, background noise is greatly minimized, and the earpieces are comfortable. I'm very happy with my purchase. These are excellent and make my job a lot easier.Clients who seem to record on potatoes now sound like human beings and I can easily transcribe what is being said. It cut down on a lot of rewinding!Haven't used them for music but I imagine the sound is pretty great.Go ahead and buy these. 54.5 Stars For a Great Upgrade for Video Production I decided to buy these because it is just too much work to fix the audio in post. I used some consumer Wesc headphones that did an all right job while booming, but they would always hurt my ears after a short while (probably due to a harsh factory set EQ curve) and would leave me guessing if a nearby plane's rumble would show up in the audio. These Senal SMH-1000 are much better to listen to on the field. The EQ is much flatter, provide less stress on the ears, and pick up on things that normal headphones don't pick up (especially in the low end). The pressure they exert on your ears gets annoying after a while, but that's pretty much the problem with every over-ear headphone. The noise cancelation is pretty good though--I find myself using much lower volumes than I did before. For more comfort, you can replace the ear pads with Senal Velour Earpads (Pair), or Senal Genuine Sheepskin Leather Earpads (Pair). I haven't tested these out yet, so I cannot comment on them.I bought these over Sony MDR7506 Professional Large Diaphragm Headphone because the cord is detachable--which is very useful when you want to fit all your gear into one bag. There's a 3' straight cable, and a 10' coiled cable (around 6' when not stretched). To attach the cable, plug it into the left side of the headphone and twist, there's a plastic tip on the end that secures it to your headphone. It also stays in if you don't twist. The downside is that the plug is a 2.5mm jack (pretty sure it is anyway, no information on the Senal site). It may be hard to find a generic 2.5mm male to 3.5mm male coiled cable if you lose yours. The headphones seem to made of aluminum, but I'm not sure if they're painted black, or if they are anodized. There are areas where the headphone's metal can clank against each other and potentially take the paint off. I placed a little gaffers tape in those areas to prevent that. The cushion on top is comfortable and the stitching seems fine. It's very clear that these are modeled after the Sony MDR7506 because they have the words, "STUDIO MONITOR," written on them (apparently it's EQ curve is similar too). They don't come with a case, which is somewhat annoying (I use a thin lens pouch to store mine), it comes with a gold plated screw on 1/4" jack adapter, and it comes with a 3 year warranty. Not much more to say, I'm sure there are way better headphones out there that are much more expensive, but then again, I read that a lot of audio engineers say they prefer their Sony MDRs. The Senal SMH-1000 have a similar EQ curve and have a detachable cord, so it was a no-brainer for me. 5Great sounding at this or any pricepoint. Not very high in bass, but bright and clear throughout the the spectrum. I got these on sale for under $50. They sound GREAT, and the cables that lock into the earpieces are really useful. I did have to purchase new pads, as the ones that came with it pressed my ears down, and were painful after a couple hours. New pads were like $7, though, so not a big deal. Bass is kind of low on these, but they do sound amazing with the right songs. I use them when playing guitar. My only complaint is that the shorter cable only runs 3 feet. Using these at a computer or something can be a pain. 3 feet is just too short. 4 feet would have been perfect, but I often find myself having to take these off if I want to lean back in my chair. I could use the other cable, but it is 10 feet long, and so I just end up with a pile of cable sitting next to me.Edit: One year on, and I still love these headphones. The short cable is not much of an issue since I use it these mostly while working on my laptop. I also use these when playing guitar and I don't want to disturb anyone else. I recommend these to anyone, and only contrast them to comparable Sony headphones when the price is similar enough to justify it. Would definitely buy these again. 5Great for transcription. These are awesome. I got them for transcription/captioning work, and i can hear everything very clearly. I love that the ear pads swivel so I can just hold one up to my ear when I'm only listening to a short snippet of audio without contorting the set or having to put it all the way on. 5Got these for my wife, at home transcriptionist. ... Got these for my wife, at home transcriptionist. She was blown away by them, we've tried so many others, and she hasn't stopped raving about these.. 5Great for transcription and listening to music I use this for audio transcription and listening to music. Music sounds much better than it did on my old Skullcandy Aviators that these replaced. People s voices are really crisp and easy to make out which helps with transcription quite a bit. The headphones are comfy to wear but feel tight around my neck, so I have to either leave them on my ears or take them off completely. They don t fold up very tightly so they take up more space in my laptop bag than I d like and don t fit into my Skullcandy headphone bag. Despite these two small issues I'm still giving these headphones five stars because they sound is great, they re reasonably priced and they re comfortable to wear for long periods of time. 5with no false frequency bias like you get with the Beats lineup I'm no audiophile, but I spend a lot of time listening to a variety of music while I work. I was looking for a flat response that would accurately reproduce the music as intended, with no false frequency bias like you get with the Beats lineup. I will say that the sound is exactly what I was looking for. I docked two stars for a physical quality problem. I chose these over the Sony MDR7506 for the convenience of a detachable cord. However, after only two months of frequent but light office desk use, the connection is loose. I have to remain very still and avoid any interference with the cord to prevent the right headphone from cutting out. I tried both cords that came with the product, and they have the same issue. 3Almost exact same sound but more thought put into the product I love my Senal smh1000s so much!! The sound is accurate, not fatiguing and beautiful - to me. Some people like things to be over accentuated and would prefer Beats or whatever. These are much more my style. The detachable cord was what made me choose these over the 7506, because my last pair broke at the plug. Fixable, yes, but I soldered and it fell apart again after a week. Not a long term solution. These gave me the piece of mind that if the cord breaks, I'll be able to continue using cans I spent hard-earned money on. Such a simple concept, probably doesn't add $1 to the manufacture cost, yet it was what convinced me. Oh, and Senal's warranty is 3x longer than Sony's. Take note competitors. 5SMH must stand for Shake My Head. I've been a headphone collector for a while. My experience has stemmed from owning the following: AKG K551, DT770, ATH MSR7, Modhouse Audio Argon, AKG K240S, AKG K240DF, Ultimate Ears UE6000, SRH440, JBL S500, Sony MDR ZX701ip, and the most relevant comparison, the MDR7506.The Senals are the worst of them all in terms of build as well as sound.First of all, these are definitely an MDR7506 clone. Those last forever, and I'd imagine these would if they were constructed better. The headband assembly of mine came missing a screw. Under the earpads, the foam ring around the driver a la 7506 was glued imprecisely. A 5 year old could glue better than this. Speaking of the earpads, while the cup itself is as large as the 7506, the earpads are not. They are much, much smaller. The earpads on the 7506 were overear for me, these were an on ear. I get that the SMH1200 have bigger pads but thats twice the price. So for the sound.... where to begin. They hurt. a lot. Theres some spike in the midrange that masks all transparency in the mids and treble detail. The intro guitar to "Anna Molly" is a great test because every headphone interprets mids differently. The SMH-1000 decides to turn this flavorful intro into a one-note sounding buzz. It truly has never sounded this bad.The treble is recessed but also lacking. They call it "laid back" but unlike the K551s or the UE6000, they aren't detailed either. "Spiderwebs" by No Doubt typically has a lot of layers in the chorus and I heard none of the detail through these.Lastly, the bass. Unlike the frequency response on the box, they do not extend nor are they tasteful. Run the Jewels "Talk to me" sounds like it was playing through a cheap speaker at a thrift shop. This isn't even a "studio monitor" sound. I've heard my buddy's M40x, HD280, and my 7506/SRH440, and none of them sound this inaccurate.Every pad swap I tried, the HM5, Shures, the MDR 7506s, etc sounded even worse.Avoid at all costs. These arent worth even 30 dollars let alone the 75 theyre asking for. 1Good headphones, could fit tighter. I'm an audio engineering student, and have done plenty of ear training related to frequency/compression/stereo image and the like.First off, these are not overly expensive studio headphones; they're more of a first pair for the engineer on a budget. That being said, I like the frequency response on these better than other comparable headphones at the price-point, such as the Sonys that these are almost an exact copy of in styling. The mids are sweeter and the highs are more comfortable in comparison to the Sonys (I A/B'ed a pair to get a feel for the difference). The other big advantage is the removable cable-the phones come with two cables, one short and one long coiled. You can swap them out as necessary. This is a wonderful feature for someone who (like me) likes to have a short cable when I'm out and about for general listening or working on my laptop, and then leaving the long cable plugged into my desktop at home for use when I am writing/recording/mixing, or just for general listening. My complaint about these headphones, however, is the fit. I have a normal-to-large head (I'm a 5'10", 185lb guy, my head is probably around average to a little bigger just based on my body dimensions), and they're way too loose. A friend of mine who I've done some studio work with has a pair of $300 AKGs that have a much better squeeze. I'd expect the expensive cans to have a better sound and feel higher build quality, which they do, but I would have hoped that creating a pair of headphones that squeeze onto your ears enough to get proper bass response would be more universal. I just feel like I have to really crush them onto my head with my hands to hear the lower end of the frequency spectrum (which, by the way, these headphones have a great frequency response range).I am not making this up! I did a test using white noise and an EQ with a very tight Q to boost/cut frequencies, and I could hear from about 20Hz to about 21kHz using these. The 20Hz I had to crank the volume for, however, since the driver seems to need a little extra help/needs to be closer to my ears to get better bass response. If I figure out a way to make them squeeze a little tighter without moving the drivers away from my ears (as in I'd like to avoid the extra padding solution, as the drivers will be moved physically further even if the headphones feel tighter), I think these are great.Basically 1 star off for the fact that they don't squeeze onto my ears enough, otherwise 5 stars for the price.Oh, also, I've had these for about 8 months and so far they're holding up great. I use them for many hours almost every day, and have been doing so since I bought them. They get used for everything from everyday music listening and gaming to tracking in the studio to doing reference listens and preliminary mixes. 4
