Customer Reviews

Simple, easy to use camera good for activities For the price I think this is a great camera for activities. Although I was nervous after reading the reviews that the camera's plastic casing was poor quality mine camera has held up. I have taken this camera tubing, biking and snorkeling. The pictures have turned out very nice and clear and the videos are good for capturing the moment. The only disappointmentsI have with the camera is the sound and bluetooth connection. Because of how you hold the camera the sound doesn't really come through clearly or if you're moving there is a lot of static. The wifi/bluetooth connection to my iphone didn't work at all for me unless I was on a secure network. When I was on my last trip I had no way of looking at my photos until I could get access to a computer with an SD reader (luckily I had my micro SD card adapter with me). With that said I am not a technology wiz so maybe it was a user area. Unfortunately I thought disconnecting and reconnecting the camera from my phone would help but then forget that you have to enter a code that's given in the original packaging. Still have not reconnected my camera. Once I can figure out this feature though I think I will use the camera a lot more since I can share pictures or stream live.Again, I would definitely recommend this camera as an easy activities camera that's fun to use to capture the moment. 4Great little action camera with perfect ergonomics This camera will beat hands down any cell phone or GoPro in usability department. Cell phones are clumsy to use while doing any kind of activity. GoPro's either need to be mounted on me (helmet, chest, etc), or fixed to the equipment (e.g. bike), or used on a pole (try hand holding GoPro while riding bike). This little thing, I can stash it in the jersey pocket, quickly grab it, take a photo and stash it back into pocket. It has totally odd shaped, but unlike GoPro you can actually hold it in a hand. It'll turn on automatically and be ready to use the moment you grab it.The photo quality isn't on par with the high-end smartphones or latest generation GoPro. However, it is good enough for outdoors during daylight. Plus, may photos I took with it, would be impossible (or at least unsafe for either me, the camera, or both to try to capture) with virtually anything else out there on the market. So you know, between having not-as-good photo as latest iPhone can produce and not having a photo at all, I'd pick former. The few downsides are liste below. The camera struggles a bit when sun or too bright part of the sky is in the frame, which given very wide angle of the lens is a bit hard to avoid. Modern cell phones mostly cope with such light better.Neither the software for the camera or the phone (I used Android version only) hasn't seen update in almost two years. It's usable and works, but would be nice to see more regular updates from the manufacturer. The shutter button is bit too soft and can get pressed "on its own" as camera shifts in the pocket. It'll often take photos of inside of my jersey pocket. Few times it started recording video of it too, so now I have few about 15-ish minutes videos of inside of my pocket. Oh well.Other than that, I enjoyed the camera and all the photos that neither cell phone or GoPro would make possible to capture. 4Great little camera with a few limitations In case you don't want to read my in depth review, the summary: in my opinion, the Re Camera is for those that want a cool toy camera or a simple wide angle pocket camera--one to take goofy underwater pool shots, one to take a time lapse of the snow building up in their yard, one to strap to your toddler and let them run around the park taking a video, one to take beautiful wide angle landscapes. I doubt it replaces anything you currently have, but in combination with your smartphone camera it is probably a great travel photo kit. With the Re Camera you won't be afraid to take it anywhere and can capture wide angle landscapes, selfies, time lapses, slow motion and action videos. WARNING! It is not for those that want to take selfies at a night time concert, or photos of their child blowing out birthday candles with the lights off.If you are concerned with image quality mentioned in other reviews, read below and check out my photo uploads comparing it to an iPhone 5s camera. In bright light the quality is good. In low light there is a lot of blur from motion in your hand or moving subjects. Now for the in-depth review.Let's start with the pros:1) Wide-angle deliciousness! In the days of nearly every photo/video on Facebook or Instagram being flat and narrow field of view photos, the drama of a wide angle shot or video is very refreshing. The sensor/lens/processor of the camera are well harmonized to produce great photos in good light. The form factor helps do away with those vertical videos as well. This makes the camera a great pocket cam for traveling and days at the beach or an afternoon hike.2) Ease of use. The camera is simple. One click of the button = photo. Hold down the button for a few seconds = video.3) The form factor. While some scoff at the periscope/crack pipe/asthma inhaler aesthetics, I quite like it. The tube makes the lens stand up off whatever is holding it up. It also makes it easy to use a simple rubber band or Velcro strap to attach it fence posts, your jacket, tree branches, etc. this is especially handy for...4) Time lapse videos. Because it's small and lightweight, has a wide angle lens, is relatively cheap, and weather proof, I don't feel bad leaving this outside to capture time lapses or long videos. This is probably my favorite aspect of the camera. While modern cell phones have this feature, who wants to leave their $600 phone out on a beach or city street for 2 hours. Smart phones also usually don't have wide angle lenses like the re cam either. It's so light, a little tape is all you need to mount this to nearly anything.5) It takes a good selfie. With the distortion correction built in to the app, this camera takes a good selfie...better than any cell-phone I've tried. You get a lot of the background in, which is what you want to make your followers jealous, right! Of course, with the remote operation, you can set the camera on something and take a good selfie without your stretching your arm.Image quality. Those negative reviews that cite poor image quality are mistaken...to a degree. The quality of the images are good, but only in good lighting. Like any camera (even a $2000 DSLR), the right light is needed to get a good exposure for the lens/sensor/shutter settings. In order to make the camera have a large depth of field (nearly everything in focus), the aperture and sensor size are small. Coupled with the wide angle lens, this means that nearly everything is in focus all the time. This is good for video (no focus breathing) and action shots (the subject is always in focus) but only in good, bright light. I'm guessing those people complaining of blurry photos were using the camera in low light where the camera does not perform (see cons below). The cons:1) Battery life leaves a little to be desired. While I deal with this by having a usb power pack handy, it seems doubling the capacity would have been better, especially since the time lapse is such a good feature of the camera. I get maybe an hour or so under heavy use? I haven't tested it much, but you will not be impressed by the battery.2) The connectivity is not perfectly reliable. The trick I found is to make sure you start the app first. This tells the camera via Bluetooth to turn on the wifi. Then, you'll see the camera listed as wifi to which you can connect. This process takes 30-60 seconds which is a bit cumbersome to set up a time lapse or frame a selfie using the remote feature. It would have been nice if it was all through Bluetooth, but I guess the bandwidth of Bluetooth isn't good enough. But at least the remote shutter could have been a Bluetooth feature?!3) The charging port is blocked by the tripod mount. If you want to take a long video or long time lapse, you'll need external power. Unfortunately, the charging port is blocked if you have a tripod attached. I get around this by strapping the camera to a tripod or any vertical pole so that the port at the bottom is exposed. Would be nice if the port was on the side or something though.4) Low light performance. In photos, the low light performance is pretty bad. The camera seems to decrease the shutter speed a lot to deal with low light rather than upping the ISO and givin you grainy, but clear photos like an iphone. This means you need a really steady hand and a stationary subject to take usable low light photos. The form factor and companion app mean you can just set the camera down anywhere and snap a photo, but then why not just use your smartphone whichrobably has much better low light performance? Video is usable in lowish light, but this camera is best for outside and well lit interiors.5) An advertised feature is that the camera (or app) automatically rotates images/video if you take them with the camera sideways. So far, this hasn't worked and I'm not sure if my camera is defective or what. I'm looking into it and will update accordingly.I've uploaded a few sample photos. I've compared the re cam to an iPhone 5s in direct sunlight. It's an good illustration of what most people are missing with their smartphone photos--wide angle. The crops are to compare image quality and in bright light you can see it's pretty good and on par with a good smart phone. In the interior photo (it's a Starbucks), you can see that the photos aren't nearly as sharp and clear. Whether it's from the motion of the subjects or a shaky hand, this camera is not ideal for interior (low light) photos. This is not a deal breaker for me, but can be for some I understand. 4I ordered it hopeful that my order would arrive in good condition. The product itself was packaged well and ... Although other reviewers have posted about how fragile this item is, I ordered it hopeful that my order would arrive in good condition. The product itself was packaged well and I didn't see any viable signs of it being crushed or mishandled. However, soon after opening, the base of the re device already shows some damages. This makes it pretty much useless as a waterproof device and also guarantees the crack from opening up even more over time.I tried the camera and while I can live with the mediocre picture quality, the wifi connectivity is unreliable.I really wanted to love this device and am disappointed by its poor quality. This should never have made it past the production line and any good manufacturing company would have done its due diligence to do some drop tests before it launches to market. I know because I work for a major HW company and we launch products all the time. Suffice it to say I'm not buying another HTC product ever again. 1Very unsatisfied At first I was excited to get this portable camera for my motorcycle rides. I had seen other pics and videos posted online by other users. Pics were clear, video was clear, game on. I received it as a Christmas present, and set it up with no problem. I downloaded the app and after several tries was able to connect it to my iphone 6s and see my test pics and videos on my phone. Finally the day came to test it on a motorcycle ride. I took pics and video with it. Later that night I sat down with my phone, opened the app, and it asked me for a password. I didn't originally set it up with a password, so I had none. There is no option to retrieve or reset your so called password either. I went online and looked for a solution. The only option was to reset the camera to factory settings, which I did...repeatedly. It kept taking me to the same password screen and running me in circles. I did an online chat with HTC support. After 75 mins of my time back and forth I was told the camera was not compatible with my phone. WTH!? It had just worked two weeks prior with no problems. I had even uninstalled and reinstalled the app to be sure. Oh sure, I can pull the SD card out and get the pics and videos off of the card, but my hope was to be able to share these videos from my phone online with friends. I even tried emailing a video to myself to open and save on my phone, but it said the file was over the limit. Bottom line, I'm mad and very unsatisfied with this product and the company's inability to solve the issue. Thanks for wasting my time and my money HTC 2A must buy for someone wanting to easily capture life moments. I absolutely LOVE this camera. I researched this camera as an option to take on our honeymoon with us, and decided it was a good fit after reading some reviews. I bought it early to test out and took it to the water park. It was fabulous! Great pictures and fun video easily - the waterproof feature was great. We just went on our honeymoon - a 7-day cruise through New England and Canada and a day in New York City after. There were several times when I told my husband "I LOVE this camera." It is so easy to use, and really does keep you in the moment. I would just snap away while still enjoying whatever we were doing. The pictures are great quality, and you get so much rich background in. I had a picture I snapped in Times Square and got it all in there, and someone on my facebook asked if I had a selfie stick. No selfie stick here! Just a small unobtrusive camera.I saw other travelers with big heavy fancy cameras around their necks; I enjoyed the small light Re hanging around my neck or my wrist (I purchased the lanyard) that was not cumbersome at all.Others reviews had the con listed of the camera not being good in low light, and this is definitely true. Pictures come out a little blurry if you don't hold it steady. We were at the top of the Empire State Building and I rested the camera on the metal crossings and got some great pictures of the NYC lights from this little guy! No blur. Other pictures in a restaurant were a mix of good or blurred.Battery life was great! I charged it up each night, and there was only one day that I got the low battery warning towards the end of the day when we were back on the ship already.Using this to take pictures instead of my phone also helped my phone battery life tremendously. If I had been using my phone (which is what I usually do) it probably would have died before noon each day and then, no more pictures! If you'd like an affordable, fun, and simple camera this is a must buy! It truly was perfect for us.I've included a photo taken by the Re at the Bay of Fundy Sea Caves in Saint John, Canada to show picture quality. 5COME TO FIND OUT PRODUCT WAS NOT NEW AND WAS BROKEN IN 3 MONTHS. BUYER BEWARE********* I was weary of the condition the product arrived in as the bottom didn't seem fully attached. I pushed it and it snapped in and seemed fine. 3 months later, I started having issues with the camera not taking pictures, freezing up, turning on record and not being able to stop it. I have performed countless hard resets, called HTC and now just got rejected for a warranty claim because they said the item wasn't new when I got it. I contacted HTC in November, which puts my purchase at 5 months old. HTC will not warrant the product and I am stuck with a paperweight. I will never purchase from this seller again. 1Update: Ditching the camera after all. Original: Keeping the camera, but wish I could replace the app. SECOND UPDATE: I've decided to keep it after all, having figured out a battery work-around. Camera won't function while connected to a computer, whether charging or transferring. To get around this, I've got a 10,000 mAh external battery solar charger that I connect it to. With the external battery hanging from a belt loop and the Re connected to that via USB cable, the camera can still be used while charging.Another feature I'd sorely like it to have: a physical on/off switch. While walking today, this damned camera turned itself on and took 260 photos of the inside of my pocket. The ONLY way to power off the camera is through the software app. A physical on/off switch somewhere on the camera itself would be very useful.&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&UPDATE: Sending it back. The miserable battery life of this camera makes it unusable without a near constant charge, and that makes it pointless. I can only hope that the version 2.x is better w.r.t. both hardware and software.&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&The camera itself is ok. I knew that it had limitations, but the form factor and size/weight were big considerations. Photos are good quality, but you have to know when to turn the wide-angle feature on/off.I am thoroughly disappointed, though, by the software implementation. (Have tried Android, haven't yet tried iOS.) Things that should work, like "files will transfer when you close the app" don't. Settings like "transfer only when charging" turned on/off don't seem to have any effect. Setup, connection, and re-connection are slow and cumbersome.Biggest gripe: Failure of the app to use the SD card. I can't install nor move this app to the SD card, and when I do transfer photos via Bluetooth from the camera to my Android 5.x phone it sends them to a predefined folder in my internal memory. No option for me to change the folder at all! No option to redirect the photos/videos to the SD card! My Samsung S5 has 16 gb internal, 64 gb MicroSD card. I discovered this lack of necessary feature when my images quickly filled up my 16 gb internal memory.I will be keeping the camera and using work-arounds, like pulling images off the camera via USB cable to my Mac OSX. But, I'm hoping that when the RE v. 2 comes out it comes with more reliable, more thoughtfully designed app. 3Highly recommend this camera, so much fun to play with. I discovered this product when I was traveling in Taiwan and I was so impressed with what it can do. The price on Amazon was better than buying in Taiwan. I got it while it was less than 80 and it was a steal for me.I had hard time opening the case and got the items out. It was not a big deal for me. I charged the camera and was glad to find that it came with a 8GB micro SD card. The connecting RE app with the RE was very tricky for me. My phone is Samsung Note 3 but it kept telling me that it couldn't find the RE. My husband's phone is note 3 and it got connected instantly. I then realized because I didn't turn on the data plan, using wifi only would have problem. After connecting the device to my note 3, I have no problem connecting it without using the data plan. This is cool. The app works great controlling the RE and the picture, video qualities are great. I had a Polaroid POLC3 Cube and it was nothing to compare to this HTC RE. I love my HTC RE.I haven't used it in water but knowing it can be used under water was very nice. My husband loves its slow motion video recording. All works very well. Buy it, I highly recommend this camera. 5Having SO much fun! I'm having so much fun with this camera! Time lapse is my favorite - I could play with that all day long! I've also used it to do a live feed to YouTube of my birdfeeder. Temps were in the low 40s and it worked like a champ. My wishlist for the camera would be that- I could connect to the camera while on my home WiFi, and not have to use cellular data to do live feeds. I can't imagine anyone has the cell bandwidth to do this more than once or twice a month, and I think it's a really great concept. Also, I sometimes lose my WiFi connection to the camera and it switches back to the my FiOS connection. It's a bit tedious to go back and forth between settings and the camera app to get it reconnected.- When you create a time lapse, just back up the final movie, not all the individual photos that made up the movie. I filled my iCloud accidentally because I didn't know it was going to do that. I had to turn off the backup function.- Ability to store photos and videos [offline] in the App instead of my photos. 5
